Have you ever wondered how Japanese women (and men) upkeep their youthful looks? Their secret is dermal fillers. The global facial aesthetics market was worth US$2.5 billion in 2013 and – growing at an 11% CAGR from 2013 to 2020 – is expected to be worth US$5.4 billion by 2020.

Unlike consumers in countries such as China and South Korea, Japanese consumers do not generally seek dermal filler products that offer semi-permanent or permanent results. This is due to the health risks and complications caused. Consumers in Japan tend to prefer hyaluronic acid (HA) products such as Belotero.

Belotero (Merz) can do exactly what the other leading hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers can do, both in terms of its ability to correct wrinkles and folds and volumize the face and lips. Moreover, its duration is also equivalent to both Juvéderm (Allergan) and Restylane (Medicis), two cornerstone HA filler products. The fillers can last up to 1 year. Compared to Juvéderm and Restylane, Belotero is a newer-generation HA that is molecularly tweaked in such a way to treat volume loss and contour without having to worry as much about lumps and bumps and the Tyndall effect* (a bluish discoloration when injected too superficially in the dermis.)

Japanese women do prefer a more natural and younger look, compared to the South Korea ‘plastic surgery obsessed’ counterparts. That’s why dermal fillers are a rising trend among the Japanese and other Asian countries. Here are some examples of Japanese celebrities who has dermal fillers done.

Ever wondered how dermal fillers treatment is done to make a subtle change to the face? Here’s a walk-through process of a dermal filler treatment by using Belotero,

1) Firstly, I met with an experienced aesthetic doctor, Dr Komathy from the lifestyle clinic for a consultation. Dr. Komathy went over with me the benefits, costs, and risks with me. From there, we’ll have a good understanding of what I’m looking to improve and which areas need to be treated. For my case, my chin needs to have more forward projection, nose tip needs to be lifted, cheeks, tear through, lips need more volume and eyebrow can be lifted with a little filler for a brighter look.

2) Numbing cream is applied for 15 mins to ensure comfort for the fillers later, I felt a tingly sensation while the face is numb and ready for the next step.

3) Local anesthesia (LA)is administered on my cheeks, temples, chin to ensure the pain is greatly reduced.  A fine gauge needle is used during these injections. As a result, the discomfort I experienced is minimal. 2cc of Belotero volume is administered in my cheeks to replace volume loss, 2cc of Belotero Volume + Intense is mixed to create a higher viscosity* (thicker) for areas like the chin and nose. While for under eyes and lip contour areas, Belotero Soft is used. (lower viscosity).

The typical Asian face do not have a significant contour, and the chin is often small and retracted. In this quick, 5 minute procedure, the filler was administered through a needle and cannula. For my case, my chin does need additional botox to further relax the stubborn muscle for a better result.

For the nose, some filler is administered for straighter shape and lift the nose tip up. My lip contour is also further defined, eye bags lightened and cheeks volumized with Belotero fillers.

4) Dr Komathy gently massaged the filler to better integrate and spread the product and the treatment is completed! Overall, the pain is manageable and since Belotero is mixed with lidocaine, there is not much discomfort except the areas with more nerve endings like the cheeks/eyes/nose areas.

Belotero filler effects take place as the injection is given. You can get the filler injections and immediately to back to your usual work duties and social activities. The entire appointment should take less than an hour. Most patients need just 45 minutes with Dr Komathy. This makes it a popular lunch hour procedure. There are very few side effects. Minor swelling, redness, and bruising are the most common, but they do not last long.

For anyone keen to improve their looks, my tip is to find an experienced aesthetic doctor like Dr Komathy to achieve the desired look you want with safe results. My Belotero filler treatment is done at The Lifestyle Clinic, located at One Orchard Boulevard #16-03 Camden Medical Center, Singapore 248649. In summary, the U.S. leads the market for facial aesthetics owing to wider consumer base and greater consumer awareness. In addition to this, the anticipated introduction of topical neurotoxins in the U.S. by 2016 has bolstered the growth of the regional facial aesthetics market. Asia has emerged as a strong contender in the facial aesthetics market. This, in turn, has positively impacted the facial aesthetics market in Asian countries like Japan.
