Interview with GLAPOCHA plus-size model Moka

TSS had the chance to interview several plus-size models from GLAPOCHA magazine!

Today, let us introduce you to MOKA, one of the women who wants to share plus-size fashion in Japan with the world! With her complicated past in middle school, she is now shining with self-confidence.

1. First of all, could you introduce yourself ?

My name is Moka! Normally during the week I work as a secretary in a hospital, but I have also been a Glapocha model for 2 years. I hope to become a plus-size model who inspires others!

2. How would you define being plus-size in Japan ?

As Elly and Mariana mentioned [coming soon], I was pointed out from a young age that I was fat. I was even bullied in middle school because being “fat” has a negative image, and I think even now the bullying must not have stopped. Now that we are adults, there are less and less people who make mean comments but I think a lot of people who formulate their comments in their heads.

And actually when I want to go to the beach or put on a bathing suit, I still feel pressure from others. Even though I try to be confident, the negative image still persists and the activities that plus-size people want to do are prohibited by society.

3. What does body positive means for you ?

For my part, I really wonder who decided that thin people were more beautiful, I find it ridiculous. Thanks to this expression, I have become brighter and I think it can help many people. Everyone is so different, and everyone is fine the way they are. I would like this expression to spread everywhere so that everyone can have confidence in themselves and love themselves as they are.

4. Do you think social media has played a part in the way people view models of different sizes and races?

I think it’s lucky that we have social networks to discover the rest of the world and how people are. Myself, my life changed a lot two years ago because of my discovery of social networks which expanded my little world a lot.

5. Do you have any role models or inspirations?

I first came across Momoka Ai’s [GLAPOCHA’s founder] instagram when I discovered plus-size fashion. Even now when I see her instagram or the instagram of other Glapocha models, I think they all look very beautiful and radiant.

She shows off her curves and facial expressions very well, and I would like to convey the same as a young woman.

6. Do you have a message for people abroad who are plus-size, who are interested or don't know about this category?

We are all the same! Be confident in yourself, and live happily!
